President Obama Was Right on Cue

January 13th, 2011

by Deborah Brown

Like so many of you, I was moved by the healing, uplifting, and kindhearted speech given by President Obama at the memorial service for the victims of the Tucson, Arizona tragedy. President Obama exemplified what it means to be a leader in a time of difficulty. The president stayed above the fray. He didn’t finger point or play the blame game, but offered words of healing, hope, and comfort to the victims, their families, and the nation. Read the rest of this entry »

Stop Putting Things Off

January 8th, 2011

by Deborah Brown

Now that you’re over the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s time to roll up your sleeves, and tackle those things you’ve put on the back burner. How about that closet of yours, you know the one that needs cleaning out. It’s filled with shoes that hurt your feet, clothes that are either out of style, or you can’t wear. New Year’s Resolution

December 28th, 2010

by Deborah Brown

It’s time to start making your New Year’s resolution if you haven’t already done so. I don’t know about you, but it seems as if this year has flown by, and I haven’t accomplished half the items on my list of resolutions from this year. Maybe, I should make a shorter list for the New Year. Read the rest of this entry »

The Real Meaning of Christmas

December 11th, 2010

by Deborah Brown

During the Thanksgiving holiday, my husband and I had the privilege of being one of those “Black Friday” shoppers. We had  never done this before, so we wanted to see for ourselves what all the hoopla was about or was it hype. We were interested in one of the door buster items and arrived at the store at approximately 4:45 A.M. Although I was a little skeptical, I had to admit it was entertaining to see all those folks racing through the aisles with shopping carts, filling them to capacity, and shopping like there’s no tomorrow. What Are You Thankful For?

November 20th, 2010

by Deborah Brown

While walking to my car after leaving a department store, I observed a thin, frail, gray hair woman struggling to get out of her car. Eventually, with the help of her dark brown wooden cane she was able to pull herself up. Eyeing the shopping cart left in the empty parking space by her car, she wobbles toward it. Too Much Negativity-Not Enough Encouragement

October 16th, 2010

by Deborah Brown

It appears that when you turn on the television or read the newspaper these days you’re bombarded with negativity. Yes, we’re all well aware that the national unemployment rate is high and millions of people all across this county are suffering because of the long-standing economic crisis, but the situation is improving. Contrary to the negative messages that we’re constantly hearing there are positive things occurring. What we really need to hear is less gloom and doom, and more optimism. The people, who are suffering need to know that there’s “light at the end of the tunnel.” So, it would be nice when you turn on the television that you could hear or when you pick-up a newspaper you could read that “the glass is half full instead of half empty.”

Do you think the media is too negative?

Let Your Light Shine

September 29th, 2010

by Jazzmyne Davis

Sweet child of mine
Gracious and divine
I’m your mother
So you best to mind
Let your light shine
Don’t be quick to whine
The world is full of dark places
Therefore, dance heavenly with your eyes open
And let your light shine
Don’t be cruel
Be kind
Stand tall and honor your time
Take to the Lord
For he that shines
Pleads the blood
Be that Shepherd
Be that star
Be that one to deliver us afar.

Jazzmyne Davis, a young aspiring writer letting her light shine through poetry.

You’re feeling fantastic right now, you’re gainfully employed, you have a roof over your head, your bills are paid, and you started a saving account. Finally, you have peace of mind. His Light

August 9th, 2010

by Rebecca A. Steele

There is but one light that shines through the eyes of man!
It is his own! It is his unyielding, ever present sense of himself
It is the spark of his own humanity, be it constant or void, but
Non-the-less it is his own.

It is his ownership of his future
It is his reverence of his past
It is his respect for his present

There is an amazing light that inhabits his existence
This light causes the production of his deeds and
The fulfillment of his needs

There is but one light that shines through the eyes of man!
It is his undying mantra, which says, Yes I Can!

It is his conquest of his deepest fears
It is the refusal to be conquered by them
It is his ability to be unmoved by life’s storms

It is his sight on the other side, to understand why
He had to endure the wrath to begin with

There is but one light that shines through the eyes of man!
This light simply says, Yes I AM!!

Leap of Faith

July 24th, 2010

by Deborah Brown

While relaxing in a shady area of our backyard, I observed a squirrel digging in the ground. Suddenly, it stops digging, races across the opposite side of the yard, and leaps onto the top of our next door neighbor’s fence. Then without hesitating, the squirrel leaps off the fence, into the air, landing on a small flimsy tree branch, causing it to bow. Read the rest of this entry »
