In a recent news article, it was reported that couples married for more than twenty years filing for divorce in Malaysia were offered up to $440.00 each to take a free honeymoon on the government as an effort to help save their marriage. This made me ponder the feasibility of similar actions in such a great country as the United States of America, which rank number one among divorce statistics.
It brought to mind the quote by Saint Jerome, “Good, better, best, never let it rest, til the good is better and the better is the best.”
Good-
What if, in America, couples with children were required to seek mandatory counseling after filing for divorce.
Better-
What if, every couple files for a marriage certificate were required by law in each state to attend premarital counseling and assessment.
Best-
What if, the Department of Family and Children’s Services became a cabinet level governmental protection and preventive service agency.
Since the institution of the family is the basis of a true democracy, why not focus on improving the fundamentals that strengthen the foundation of family life.
